CONSERVATION

INTRODUCTION

Paykuli Project conservation staff follows a dual purpose: the first related to the protection, the conservation and the study of materials constituting the Paikuli Monument and the second addressed to the training of Slemani Museum technical staff and related to conservation of archaeological material. More generally, the aim is the creation of a team of local staff who can deal with the correct restoration and conservation needs of each individual find preserved in the Museum.
It is evident the huge importance of proper training of personnel responsible for the conservation of archaeological finds, not just those kept in the museum, but also those distributed in the several archaeological excavations in the Iraqi Kurdistan region. The historical heritage that this region has is of such importance as to have the need to be looked after by a technical staff that could take care of its protection fallowing the European an d Italian criteria for conservation.

PAIKULI

The blocks which show signs of mouldings or inscriptions recognizable still present in the excavation field in Paikuli were transported to the Slemani Museum for conservative reasons and to avoid any theft.
It was also carried out a first study on the materials constituting the monument which results will soon be published in this section.

SLEMANI MUSEUM

During the mission, for the inscribed blocks of Puikuli Monument, were developed, together with the the Museum staff, standards and rules that could prevent the most common conservative troubles or try to treat any damages already occurred.
For this reason finds coming from the Paikuli Monument, were transferred from a room where they were not legible because of their position, to a broader and more suitable space, where they could be easily observed and where restoration interventions were possible .
